Beverly's Update Beverly’s Update July – where oh where has the rain gone? We are doing rain dances every day hoping that we will see some very soon. Do the hot summer days have you yearning for fresh fruit and vegetables? Visit your local farmers’ market for fresh produce and quench the thirst. Melons, corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash – and be on the lookout for unique items grown in this diverse agriculture landscape. There are magical moment on an farm and there is nothing better than getting produce direct from farmers. The special atmosphere at the markets make for a great outing with your family. Everywhere, gardens are growing in full stride. The fruits are loving this weather, the plants are struggling and yet we still feel the connection to the earth knowing that the fruits and vegetables found in the gardens or at the local farmer’s markets will sustain us through the next months. We will soon have tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, cucumbers, beans and, of course, an abundance of squash. There is plenty of basil – ah - the smell of pesto filling the kitchen. Blueberry season is upon us. We pick every day. Black raspberries were delicious and now blackberries, wineberries and raspberries are showing their faces. The garlic is ready to be harvested. Onions are brought to the kitchen daily – chard, beets and carrots are still providing for the menus and now we are ready to replant for a continuous supply. Check out the website for our special dinners occurring in July and August. We are happy to have Chef Thurston, Charleston, SC with us on July 30. Chef Little, Hanover, PA will join us on August 12 and we are very excited to have paired up with our very own Loudoun County Catoctin Distillery for a dinner on August 6. July 25, the Loudoun Chef’s Collaborative will hold their second fundraiser, benefiting Loudoun Therapeutic Riding at Vintage 50 Restaurant in Leesburg, VA. Nine chefs, several wineries, Vintage’s brewery and area farms will donate their time and talents for a worthy local cause. You may purchase tickets at Vintage 50 ($68.00) for an evening of good food, drink and fun. Don’t miss this event. Tickets are selling fast.
